@Swarthy don't make the mistake I did
don't buy a T480. Someone like you doesn't need one I presume + it has a lot of well known issues (Thunderbolt frying itself with outdated firmware) that are a pain in the ass to fix.
see if you can buy a T470p (quad-core) or something similar. Or just a regular T470 if you don't need the added performance.

Really anything is better than my current laptop.

It's likely that the disk in your laptop is an HDD seeing from how it's constantly stuck at 100% activity whilst doing nothing. First order of business would be searching for a SSD and seeing if you can clone your current OS image onto it. Even if you can't there are plenty of technicians who can do it for you. 512GB should be fine but go for 1TB if you REALLY need it. I have 2TB on this T480 and I haven't even taken up 10% of it yet, even after I partitioned it to accommodate for my Debian + W11 dualboot.

I knew that the laptop had an HDD since I could hear it making all of the little noises.
My second biggest problem now is just that it will not let me dual boot with anything, which I can't fix. The computer actively does not want any operating system other than Windows on it.

Are you making separate partitions for your boot managers? You can't install 2 operating systems in 1 partition, it'd corrupt everything. Partition Manager on Windows should let you create one without a driver letter path (eg. C:, D: etc.). Or you can flash a live environment distro .iso onto a boot drive and create one from there. Just make sure you have the space for it, I'd suggest you make 2 separate 250GB partitions if you haven't taken up something like 40-45% of your current storage space.

I made lots of partitions for everything so it can be separate from Windows.
It installed just fine but I can only access it manually and due to the slowness of the computer and Windows' love for updates, it takes like 10 minutes just to get to linux rather than booting into it or showing me a choice of what to boot into.
