The concepts of "social media le bad, corporate minimalism le bad, personalization le good" appeals to me but I can't help but notice that every. Single. Person. in that movement is some kind of real woman or furcaca or other cordnoob screaming from the rooftops about the exact ideologies that killed the "old web" they claim they're so nostalgic for.
>Yeah man the old web would have totally accepted my wolf-unicorn hybrid fursona and used my goon/goonself pronouns

Also real womanliartropolis likes the old net (due to a high prevalence of porn and gore on sites with minors in it so they'd see it every minute) which is objectively a red flag.

My question is this: Do (You) believe this movement ever had merit? If it did, can it still be salvaged or is it just for real women now?

The problem with the new internet is that everything is owned by corporations and therefore has to be sanitized for advertisers in order to make money. The problem with the movement you're talking about is that it's full of real women. real women can only exist in sanitized spaces and would ack immediately if people were able to say what they actually think about them without getting banned. The movement will therefore just lead to the current internet being recreated as it's the only place its members can exist.
