/ros/ - ReactOS General

General thread
im dummyed, is reactOS shite because of higher-level components being a mess (idk win32 o algo) or is it tied to the kernel too? because while windows has changed a lot on the user-facing side, i swear MS hasn't messed with low-level NT plumbing significantly since vista. main thing being the alder lake scheduler in w11.
Oh wait, liarrosoft ignored Cutler and shoved graphical shit into kernel mode starting with NT 4.0. Fucking idiots.

The WINE part of ReactOS is "fine" but everything built around it both high and low level isn't. This is why ReactOS can run Half-Life 2 on compatible hardware, while it struggles to even boot on partially supported hardware. The developers are insistent on slowly replicating the entire NT kernel and Windows userspace as clean-room and compatible as possible, and coupled with internal politics, we are where we are now - with a vibe-coded 'jeet fork taking "the lead" in compatibility both in software and hardware.

Due to internal politics and the pedantic small developer team, we are where we are now - with a vibe-coded 'jeet fork taking "the lead" in compatibility both in software and hardware.
Then at this point, the whole premise of a Windows clone (as an operating system) seems foolish. Maybe 15-20 years ago it didn't, but they're never going to get anywhere. I feel like trying to expand WINE and morph it into a more seamless/integrated translation layer would probably be the viable option.

Edit: I'm terrible at explaining things, but the closest example (ironically) is the POSIX & OS/2 subsystems that NT itself had decades ago.
