I've been learning more about World War 2, and what interests me a lot is the incompetence of the French High Command. If the French High Command could have perhaps listened to the multiple sources of people showing evidence of the Germans moving through the Ardennes (including a scout plane literally telling them there was a traffic jam in there) Or if the French could've just actually used radios and decided to not randomly change generals in the middle of the Ardennes maneuver so that the French infantry could actually reinforce the BEF holding the flanks against the German forces?
This is very much all bafflingly lucky. And if any one of those didn't work out for Germany, then the war would just be another European war that would be far smaller in scale with Germany getting stuck and losing eventually. France had a larger military than Germany at the start of the war, they just had shitty generals/high command who wanted to fight this like WWI part 2. Past that every country Germany fought either didn't have a military or barely had a military.
