I think we have a different understanding of what "pro/anti-assimilation" means politically. Leftists are anti-assimilation because they want immigrants to celebrate the culture of the country they came from, their "pro-diversity" views are anti-assimilation, meanwhile conservatives want immigrants to conform to the central American culture(I guess you could call it WASP culture), making them pro-assimilation. I suppose you have a point that anti-immigration is anti-assimilation in a way.
