Why do non-Jews find the Shoah funny?

I’m hoping perhaps someone here has some insight for me. I’m a Jewish man in his late 20’s. My whole life people who know and people who don’t know I’m Jewish have frequently made jokes about the shoah. It happened again to me today, in a meme group chat I’m part of for my DnD group, a friend sent a meme about the shoah. It wasn’t the worst he could have sent but it still shocked me and genuinely caused me to feel pain.

Throughout my life I thought most people know about what happened to us (and many other people who didn’t conform to N@zi ideals). I thought people understood how deeply painful it is for us even to this day. How it wasn’t that long ago and for many of us it was parents, grandparents and even great grandparents who either survived, escaped or didn’t. That making “light jokes” of it was not funny or even acceptable.

So why, why have so many non-Jews throughout my life found the attempts of systematic extermination of our people so funny?

I want to believe that it’s ignorance, I really really do but where I live they’re educated on the Shoah, they’re educated on WWII and the horrific crimes against humanity that occurred. So I can’t believe it’s ignorance, that they “don’t mean it”.

It’s happening more and more and I’m fairly certain we can all guess why, but it’s becoming overwhelming for me. Incidents were something that would happen maybe once or twice in a year and now it’s happening once or twice in a week. I’m not used to hurting this much this frequently and I feel so lonely and isolated.

I’ve tried speaking to my partner about it (he’s not Jewish) but I’ve felt like he’s really dismissive when I express that I don’t feel safe in our country anymore, that I worry it’s only going to get worse and that people have already targeted Jewish homes, businesses, widows and shuls in our city. His approach is it’s an overreaction, it’s disproportionate, that my concern over whether or not he’d leave the country with me if things get really bad is “alarmist”.

Please please, can someone tell me I’m not crazy? Or at least another Jew here tell me that in the UK there’s nothing to be worrying about.

I recall some years ago, a coworker made some claim about me calling me a nazi or Claus. "Haha, you're so demanding; you're a Nazi" or something like that. I immediately feigned a mortified look on my face and said deadpan, "The Nazis murdered my family." The look of horror on her face followed by the endless apologies was so worth it.

I knew she was kidding and quickly assured her that while factually true, I was not as offended as I pretended to be. She still couldn't stop apologizing. I'm sure she never again used Nazis as a punchline.

Bottom line, Jews can joke about the Holocaust, as can Romanis and other victims. Other than that, it better be a really good joke to go there. Otherwise, people will eviscerate you. I'm not making jokes about slavery, school shootings, or 9/11. They're not funny things to me, and I don't see the dark humor because I'm on the outside looking in.

Making jokes about tragedy is fairly common. There are plenty of jokes about 9/11, for example. In addition, there's also antisemitism and Jewish gallows humor (on the other side of the spectrum) that make these kind of jokes even more common.

Do you think I’m being overly sensitive? I’m also diaspora israeli and since Oct 7th I think it’s all feeling much more sharp. I accept that there’s a possibility that I’m just hurting from Oct 7th and I haven’t really dealt with that, and that the antisemitic jokes are maybe just tearing an open wound deeper before it’s had a chance to heal over.

It is called "gallows humor" and can be the only way to make sense out of the wildly horrific.

I've heard more Shoah jokes from Jews than anybody else.

Yeah, once heard someone say, it's only gallows humor if you're the one on the gallows. Otherwise it's just another jeer from the crowd.

It's Gallows humor if you're on the platform about to be hung.

Otherwise it's part of the execution.

Outside of the answers here, it is in large part because they do not understand.

A lot of people equate the Holocaust to other genocides, as evidenced by the people who are saying that Israel's current actions in Gaza are similar to the Holocaust. They don't understand the totality of the Holocaust and how unique it is amongst other genocides and acts of mass murder.

I have come to loathe the number "6 million." I don't believe it conveys any kind of useful comprehension of what the Holocaust was.

It doesn't convey the fact that Nazi Germany killed 6000 Jews per day in the gas chambers of Auschwitz for months on end.

It doesn't convey the fact that in many areas, 95% of Jewry were slaughtered.

It doesn't explain the way in which the Germans seized entire cities that had built in large part by Jews who had lived there for hundreds of years.

It doesn't account for the thousands and thousands of Jews who died of their injuries and traumas after 1945.

It doesn't explain how many of the ghettos were bulldozed and built over before 19
