Before getting this thread started this is'nt about proving or disproving God's existance. [video below explains why]
"Why would God allow life to be so painfull?" This sentence has to be one of the most famous atheistic arguments.
While the argument in which the sentence is used does not interest me, the sentence itself does. While I believe God is impossible to understand, for that is the meaning of God, I would like to ponder the question.
The definition of suffering does not exist, but in this case, I will define suffering as any experience considered unpleasent. This can mean pain, but it does'nt, for if one enjoys pain, then pain is not suffering. Suffering is simply something which one does not want to live through.
Now that suffering is defined, let's ask ourselves: why suffering?
Science at large claims that suffering exist's as a way to teach organisms what not to do — for example, a child who discovers that fire hurts.
This makes sense. God invented suffering as a way to teach us valuable lessons. The problem is, an easy counter-argument to make would be: then why did'nt the all-powerfull God not simply give the knowledge in a pleasent way?
Well then, are there any better arguments for the role of suffering as a tool to teach us lessons? I personally cannot find one, but I would be happy to see what you guys can come up with.
How I see it as an individual is that God allows suffering, for if there is no unpleasentness in life, then there not be pleasentness either. Everything which gets better must first be worse.
When at the gym, you must go through egnough effort to be incapable of lifting anything. Once the muscles recover, not only will you once again be able to lift, but you will also be able to lift more.
When an army needs a new weapon, it must take valuable manpower, and instead of using them as footsoldiers, it sends them to university to invent better ways of killing — spending manpower to need less manpower.
When taking drugs, you feel great until, if you dont take drugs, you feel horrible and need to take them to feel the bliss that is the relief of ending withdrawal.
To feel joy, you must first live a painfull experience. God allows life to be a painfull experience for it to also be a joyfull experience.
The counter-argument in this case would be: then why not simply give us joy? To which I cannot answer, for we live in a world of pain and thus cannot know if joy can exist without pain. God is unknowable, and this is the only explanation I can give for why perhaps life is so painfull.
