Maybe I'm miss remembering, but I thought he just sat with them for service/a bible session for ~half an hour before the shooting and started the shooting during it.
Either way, he wanted to kill them because "muh heckin violent blacks" but he ended up being the irrationally violent dummy killing a bunch of people who only wanted the best for him
