I believe this phenomenon is a part of the larger concept of "hybristophilia" (coined by, of all people, that schmuck John Money), where it's theorized that the woman rather observes the lack of attention and intimacy that these killers felt and thus develops a desire to provide them with that care in order to gain a partner (this could go further as a desire to "tame them" and end their violent instincts), or, much more simply, they see an opportunity of plain protection in being with someone who has shown that they can kill.

He actually went to the Disney Park the same night as the shooting, but for whatever reason there was more security than usual so he got cold feet and went back to his car.
His google maps search history for that night suggests that he didn't originally plan on going to the Pulse nightclub, but it was just the closest viable target.
