Both the ground based midcourse defense and aegis ballistic missile defense systems aim to intercept in space. Shooting down a ballistic missile is extremely difficult during all stages but is easiest during midcourse since you need interceptors in the immediate area to intercept during launch and intercepting after reentry is difficult since the missiles are too fast and a system only has a few seconds to detect the missile, lock on, and launch an interception.

true, but again, exhaustion is still overwhelming and shifts the balance on the nuke side, since in an attack not only will there be hundreds upon hundreds of nuke warheads, there will also be even more, maybe thousands of fake targets launched alongside the real one's

Of course. Aerial combat has attackers advantage. However live testing during actual war has shown that israeli systems start getting overwhelmed when dealing with several hundred targets. American systems which are likely more advanced and more capable could most likely survive even more without getting overwhelmed. Ballistic missiles also get intercepted before mirv deployment, so the amount of warheads is less relevant than the amount of missiles.
