you can have people whine about the hat choices, people not even know the current workshop drama, and people who could not give less of a shit about either all in the same room and have a normal ass discussion because chat is more or less (see: less, but not totally free[see what I said about absolute free speech at the top]) unmoderated.

i think most people forgot the fact that tf2 is a game that you play. sure, the community can be fun at times but the base game is basically dead. 99.99% of community servers are noobids from the depths of skial and casual is casual. i dont want a "bastion of free speech", i want a fucking game to play.
i really, REALLY loved gold rush when it came out. it felt like i was actually playing a game and not arguing with random chuds and real women about snca. i want that experience back.

All multiplayer games suck but some suck less than others. TF2 is fun because I can randomly crit 3 people in a row with the shotgun and laugh.
