I've saved someone from drowning before.
It was pure adrenaline: I'm really not a very good swimmer and I was ~130 pounds (I was 18 btw) and not fit at all at the time.
Before jumping in, I felt certain that I couldn't save him, and I was certain that I would drown if I tried, but I had to try.
As soon as I could touch the sand underwater and knew we were safe, I just collapsed. I tried to stand to go check on him, but I couldn't even lift my torso up, let alone stand. A bystander brought me a bottle of water, but I was so weak that he had to hold it for me while I drank

The main reason I posted this is because I'm still pissed. Someone on this raft in the lake with us just said "are you fucking serious?" No one from the raft even tried to help me.
