Say a child is born into a loving family yet eventually is found to have cystic fibrosis and suffers horridly before dying young. Why would a benevolent God allow this? What choice has that child made here?

The Illness is ultimately the result of the Sin of Adam and Eve, God is not the cause here. He simply allows the consequences of our actions and other's actions to affect us, so that we may repent.

And by the Grace and mercy of God, that child would surely end up in Heaven. A far better place than this world.
