i'm a former FNAC dev. AMA

hello reddit soyjak.forum! i don't even know if you people still but i helped develop Five Nights at Cobson's, i don't know if a lot of you remember or even know about it, but it was our homegrown spine chilling a24 slowburn unfiction indie horror game (with realistic panic attacks) from 2023.

i don't know if this is exactly the right subforum or even site to post this, but i'm bored. anyway, feel free to ask anything or however the burgers are fried

  1. What happened behind the scenes when doddermodd went rogue and started leaking assets
  2. Seriously though, what took so long with getting the game on Steam
1. nothing really. Dodder leaked some chats but it wasn't even anything really important or sensitive.
this made Froot mald peel a bit (get it? because he's a fruit) and he ended up kicking him from the dev team. i figure he was a bit too rigid when handling that issue but it's understandable, and even if it was mostly SNCA, Dodder did it more than once.
2. the party has a lot of oomf-n'ts... we lost the battle with getting the game on Steam because there were a lot of obsessed cacaots unbothered heterosexuals - namely discord detractors and actual jartycacas - flooding the reports about how our game is an evil CIA sponsored nazi bitcoin miner. and so Valve just found out it was more trouble than it was worth and conveniently swept it under the rug.

I remember Froot saying it was because of some chuddy content or the joke minimum required specs back then which always confused me because Steam is also the platform where I can purchase Tyrone vs. Cops for two dollars. This explanation makes more sense to me, especially since Steam has had a few PR incidents where they accidentally let bitcoin miners and malware onto the platform. Although I wish Froot was more transparent with the true reason, I can understand why he gave the reason he did, don’t want to give attention to bad actors.

Dodder did in fact leak some assets, but they were his own work and mostly stuff we didn't even end up using in the final game. as i said it was an understandable response from Froot, considering the context, even it if seemed a little harsh.

to put it simply, hostile detractors pretty much bullied Valve into not accepting our game in their platform. there's worse shit

holy epic fail, why do i keep having to refresh and do 'cadoflare checks this is annoying as shit

-sure there's worse shit in the steam store but the only reason we never released there was due to constant pressure (and pretty much harassment targeted at valve employees) from the opps

to clarify, we do have an actual steam page up Five Nights at Cobson's on Steam (https://store.steampowered.com/app/2709910?snr=2_9_100000_) but it's stuck in comingsoonhell. maybe things could change considering it's been a while and the dust has seemingly settled, but still.

understandable xir

maybe things could change
If froot himself uploaded it then it's doomed to be stuck in noobhell forever because froot is actually just completely gone. He deleted every single way to contact him and disappeared off the face of the earth.

i used to lean towards disliking froot back then, but my opinion changed once i got to interact with him personally.
from my interactions he seemed like a chill dude. we're both RTS nerds, specifically Command & Conquer nerds (i found out when i randomly quoted Yuri from Red Alert 2 and he was the only one who got the reference in the 'trix) and i once had a conversation about old european cars in one of his meta threads in the 'party, albeit he didn't know it was me.
i haven't interacted with him further than this but my first impressions were positive. hope

he's doing well, being a sharty admin sucks

Were you involved with IAScar too?
involved would be an overstatement, but i was there during the initial prototyping. saw some drafts and spewed some ideas and really nothing else. i don't know how things went for that project afterwards

Things were better when froot was around, even if some of the things he did were questionable. That's my take pretty much.

what was it like working with them
it was nice and an overall fun experience. one of the devs was like a 14 year old kid who was a kinda annoying and another just took the invite and never actually showed up for anything, but besides...

we were a bit stressed by time constraints though, but we pulled it off even if the end product was a little jank.
the programming guys did a great job especially considering the little time we had. people tend to undervalue code monkeys but in gamedev they're who differentiate a project between a playable game and just a loose collection of assets.
the 2D art guys did a good job too. even the ideaguys, adding the "feed the squirreljak" mechanic as a time constraint was a clever touch.
and according to them, they liked my work too. sometimes i felt the game only went fully 3D because of me honestly.

i hope they're doing well too, they're all talented folx in some way or another.

yeah, i have a mixed opinion of the froot era. the site went through a lot of turmoil - a lot of internal drama and hostile community attacks - and he did some things that upset a lot of people, but atleast there was some sporadic fun to be had. and of course, FNAC too. but still, i wasn't very satisfied with it.

my positioning on what soy-ism i'm aligned with is a little odd, it's a bit of oldcacaism, but not in the sense of a bitter gatekeeping but when most soyposts were just loosely spread on the 'cuck as bait threads/replies that actually made fun of soyboys with a few witty jokes here and there.

this is a relatively new one (and one of my favorites) but it gets the spirit. i always lose it at the "barcade" part lol

i used to belly laugh at a lot of these cleverly written but shitty bait posts that would occasionally show up randomly on the 'cuck. i'm not saying that 'party site was a bad decision since ive had my fair share of fun with the soyjak site raids and other events, but still...
anyway, i digress. i haven't checked the soysphere for a long time and haven't even properly seen how the nusharty looks like but it at first glance i don't like it
