Every PS3 has PS1 compatibility built in. Later hacked PS3s can use the PS2 Classics emulator to get some compatibility but YMMV. The PS3s with PS2 compatibility cost hundreds of dollars second hand and are starting to fail anyway so you’ll need to transplant a GPU from a newer PS3 which can set you back even more money and requires technical experience if you don’t pay someone to do it for you. Honestly at this point I wouldn’t go for a fat PS3, buy a newer PS3 plus a fat PS2 if you absolutely want to play PS2 games without any issues.

Really the big draw of buying a PS3 in current year is that you can hack it easily and download free games, there are some precautions you should be taking (like disabling syscalls) but honestly as long as you aren’t cheating or hacking trophies Sony does not give a fuck about what you do. On the other hand the 360 only just got softmodding with BadUpdate and it’s generally less convenient as you have to do it every time you power on the console. The reliability and the speed of the exploit have improved a lot though so it’s not so bad of an option these days. Most of all you’re forced to use stealth servers if you’re gonna hook the console online, otherwise both your console and your account are fucked. Even then, the better stealth servers are paid and the free ones require you to have a Gold membership on your account for some online multiplayer titles.

Oh and yeah fuck the Super Slim, I had one when I was 11 and even though I thought it was cheap and ugly looking, I don’t like the 360 E much either but at least it has a motorized tray and isn’t made from the rattiest plastic they could find.
