Park downsides:
-women
-noobs
-noob poop
-dogs
-hipsters in their mercedes camper vans
-white trash in their roachmobile Winnebagos
-etc

Trespassing downsides:
-schizos with guns
-police (very unlikely)

Is it even a debate?

Depends. Some public parks are damn near empty where I'm from and it's nice. No one even monitoring, you can just wander off into the woods.
Trespassing is cool for abandoned buildings, but I wouldn't bother with private forest land for the above reason. I can do that legally at a "public" park without seeing anyone all day

public parks are for when you need to get rid of something but don't want to jamb up an innocent property owner

Depends on your approach to either place. As someone who likes to be left alone to observe the scenery unbothered and with a sense of self-driven and earned discovery, I always go with the latter unless I'm with family. Some of my best outings have been to standard uninteresting fields, simply because I found it by myself and done so with a disregard to private property. It's always a bonus when you come across the wild thing doing so, as you're on equal mindsets of self-autonomy with no visible third party. That is unless I bring my dog, wherein I let her off the lead to explore - as animals should - with myself serving as a moving 200m range for where she can go. The former is still fun, although more for the sake of doing so than anything. It bothers me watching large dogs being tethering to weak frail women who shouldn't really own them in the first place due to their dog being sreal womanger and thus dragging her around.
