I guess it's a tolerance level sort of thing, like when you consume some shitoko shit for so long that it starts tasting dull and you need something shitoko than before. Which probably explains why in less than ten years we went from rage comics to the "E" Markiplier meme.

I think it's because the internet itself is so splintered nowadays with it's own little communities.
A lot of the old internet meh-mehs and jokes came from YTMND, 4cuck, and a few other little forums.
Eventually 9gag, Funnyjunk, iFunny, Plebbit, and a few other shitty websites join the race.
Then a lot of internet humor starts coming from Xitter and Plebbit, and 4cuck experiences an ego death similar to the United Kingdom relinquishing it's title of 'global superpower' to the United States. iFunny also sort of replaces 4cuck, o algo.
And finally, we're here, TikTok has overtaken Xitter and Plebbit as the internet's main source of humor and meh-mehs.

Humans are suffering the same problem as AI, generation loss
The internet means that natural cultural gestation is drowned out by the globally homogenous noosphere
And because it's developing entirely upon it's own information it is deterorating due to the entropic effect of generation loss
"Natural gestation" is effectively the same process but seperation between the nodes means that to other nodes it is fresh new data (if the communication time/latency between the two is high enough) which effectiely negates the issue, but with the internet becoming ever more globalised due to the reaching maturity of the lingua Franca that is English and context concious machine translation we are rapidly nearing the end times and the construction of the third temple and the terminal stages of our global Universe 25-esque experiment
