Eastern rome was still an extremely powerful and rich region. Christianity caused massive damage to the empire, but wasn't enough to destroy the richest and most powerful region on earth overnight. Christianity did lead to massive internal strife in the byzantine empire.

The roman empire split roughly 150 years before islam was created.
