iirc (and this will apply to 4g as well eventually) older network generations in the US are slowly phased out even before they shut them down entirely. for example T-Mobile's 2G network was running on a "skeleton crew" of towers before it got shut down. as time goes on towers fail and there's no point in maintaining them. same with 3G, although 3G was actually shut down before 2G in the US. in 2011 or something 3G wasn't so bad since most network infrastructure used it

Just buy a faraday hat. I don't know if it's just my area but tinfoil is a pain in the behind to find while aluminum foil (which does zilch to EMF) is in abundance.
