I was rewatching Gremlins (1984) with my family for Christmas, the film is very obviously anti-semitic, anti-foreigner, and anti-consumerist, and it’s kind of why it’s one of my favorite flicks.
The film is going for a juxtaposition between the corporate conservative yuppies and aging businesspeople of the 1980s, and the artsy liberal quirky children at heart who don't fit in with that world. It resonates with me, I’ve always wanted to be an a successful artist, and the movie’s main character is someone who wants to be a successful artist.
What really irks me is that stupid fucking dog that Billy owns, he for some reason takes it to the bank that he works at.
This indirectly suggests that dogs go hand-in-hand with youth, imagination, freedom and compassion, which is a problematic message but not an uncommon one. It goes all the way back to media like Poe's short story "The Black Cat" or Mrs. Gulch from The Wizard of Oz, that idea that only bad, stuffy, prudish, greedy or evil people dislike dogs or pets in general.
One of the human main “villains” in Gremlins is Gerald.
I hate how Gerald is portrayed as the jerk when he actually has a lot of good life advice about growing up and competing in a ruthless world. Like, how dare he dress nicely and not want pets in workplaces and give Billy advice about starting to take his career and lifestyle choices more seriously...? Still waiting for what makes Gerald so horrible. The worst thing he ever does is call Billy "Captain Clip-On", I think? But dog lovers are all entitled narcissists who don't like having to ever grow up, take responsibility, accept accountability or do anything to better themselves.
My family completely ignored me when I talked about the dog shit to them, I don’t understand. They probably have dog brain parasites or something. They just looked at me confused and called me crazy.
