It bothers me when people label themselves "Gnostics" or followers of "Gnosticism". The term in of itself holds no true, clear, concise meaning in the context of being an actual religion. Accordingly it's only recognized as an extremely rough blanket term for Christian teachings with an emphasis on achieving "gnosis" academically. Historically the term was used as a stand-in or mere alternative for "heretic" up until the Nag Hammadi was uncovered. Now, what people should be stating instead rather, is that they follow a specific sub-division of the movement. For example, "I am a Valentinianist" or "I am a Hermeticist".
