Actually, thinking back, I think it was that someone accidentally set off one of the active shooter alarm buttons (yes, we had those around the school like fire alarms).

Normally the shooter drills were announced over the intercom so they were distinct from the "you're going to die, noob" alarm

We even had a password for when they called off the drill.
Also, all new schools/renovations are done with shootings in mind. Things like hard-corners, mesh windows, how the locks work, and how much resistance the doors give when being opened. All Lanza's fault btw
