In my own guesswork, the easiest way to avoid an addiction is to not start doing the addictive thing. It's easier to avoid addictions to a thing than get off of them.
I wouldn't risk it with alcohol. If I were to get drunk, I'd get sent to federal prison or a mental asylum.
