the world machine edition reimplements a desktop interface with a file system so it's kind of like the original version
it probably has a "fake" file manager built in, at least thats how it is with DDLC on xbox
I guess that functionally fixes it, but it still ruins the whole meta aspect of it, now instead of interacting with the OS to play the game... I'm just interacting with the game to play the game.

true, though to be fair it has nice features like custom wallpapers and a built-in character wiki so its not the end of the world

xbox's operating system is a heavily modified version of windows
you can also buy onebrap on the PS5
technically speaking if OneShot was available as UWP on PC you could install it on an Xbox in dev mode and play it normally, i installed the UWP PC version of minecraft bedrock on my Series S and it lets me access the file manager so i can use third party skins

you could probably decompile the world machine edition and then recompile it as a UWP (if they didnt use AOT compilation)
this has been done before with celeste and terraria btw
