The Combine albeit. Yeah the Gordon part is weird but the worldbuilding and environmental storytelling (OH MY SOY) is what makes HL2 special. Gameplaywise it's worse than HL1 which is really fun

Also I think the G-Man told them about him returning which is why they act as if they saw a ghost

and why wouldn't Valve just confirm that story? It would actually make the game more appealing and interesting

Because they were Gearbox games, not in-house ones. Valve practically discarded whatever additional lore they offered and considered them non-canon when they were making HL2. I think there was something about an episode with Adrian and Grigori in Ravenholm where he ends up having to kill Grigori after he mutates into some kind of zombie (not headcrab). I don't remember if this was during the development of the main game or if it was afterwards. There were a couple of leaks including scripted scenes which look really cool and honestly it's kinda sad the game never got released.

I played sven-coop hardcore earlier but it was impossible to progress because you couldn't even crouch under smoke without taking damage.

how though? in HL1 Gordon is some irrelevant nerdy scientist, he gets put into stasis, nobody other than some his colleagues know about him and suddenly in HL2 he's treated like he's Jesus Christ

It makes sense for his colleagues (who are the leaders of the resistance) to react that way to him suddenly showing up without having aged at all, since the last time they saw him was twenty years ago after sending him on a suicide mission into xen to kill the nihilanth with no way back. In the early game citizens don't know you by name and just treat you like anyone else, and after Nova Prospekt it makes sense for them to treat you like a messiah since you blew up nova prospekt and started the uprising, and are again assumed dead. I forget how exactly they treat you between the airboat and nova prospekt doe.

Marc Laidlaw said the nuke was the exception to him considering Opposing Force non-canon
