They are using postpartum depression (a distraction that's irrelevant to the case) as an excuse for why she did what she did. Yes, she was mentally ill, but not in the way they're trying to portray it.
There's several layers to this:

It's inexcusable; you can't justify it. She should've had her children taken away from her. And to add to that, there had to be other times where she had a break in her psyche, where it was obvious she was off her rocker. I don't believe that was the only time she visibly showcased that sort of behaviour.

And keep in mind it takes 10-20 minutes in order to asphyxiate a person, whether it be strangulation or by hanging. So she willingly spent over 10 minutes strangling the life out of her child and never thought to stop or reconsider within that period of time. And then she kept going two more times after that. So in total she spent half an hour, if not an hour, slowly strangling the life out of her children.

I don't think even the feds could have predicted that women would come out in droves to defend that whore, honestly. I think it's being pushed to divide men and women further, but I think it's more of a case of the (((news))) pushing it because it gets engagement.
