pretty much what the title says, this will serve as a dumping ground for random thoughts i have if i ever bother to go onto this site since it gives me motivation to post
personally i am hoping for linux support on arm macs to get better, mainly in the battery life and in general more support for more distros. my personal dream is to be able to use fedora with the mate DE, i absolutly love mate and i use it on a spare laptop and i honestly love how simple it is to customize and its looks.recently i've been considering getting one of those framework laptop, more specifically the new 13 pro they just announced, i currently use a 2021 macbook pro and its really great, i think in the video announcing it, they compared to a macbook pro also and wanting to make something like it but for linux. they also said that they've been able to get comparable battery life thanks to the pather lake chip from intel. it sounds insanely inciting to get as having the same battery life of an arm macbook pro with the freedom of installing whatever os you want sounds really great, which you technically can do on arm macs, but is fairly limited by things like support, battery life etc. not to mention being able to get in directly into the laptop itself for memory, ssd and ports, it sound like a perfect laptop.
speaking of DE's, i personally don't really like GNOME, it's not my thing and honestly feels like something i would use on something like a phone or tablet than a desktop or laptop, i get that its supposed to be like workspaces and stuff but personally that's not how i use it. you can't even minimize windows on it and bring it up when you need it (except for ubuntu's variant of GNOME which makes it more tolerable). i also find kde to be quite ugly, but it is much more tolerable than GNOME, kde always had his cheap feeling when i'd use it, not to mention that the task bar also slightly hovers when you are not full screen in an application, i never understood why that is a thing.personally i am hoping for linux support on arm macs to get better, mainly in the battery life and in general more support for more distros. my personal dream is to be able to use fedora with the mate DE, i absolutly love mate and i use it on a spare laptop and i honestly love how simple it is to customize and its looks.
for the sake of my argument in terms on window management, compare just off these image how do you think mate and gnome manage windows based off these imagesreally only desktop envorments i find pleasing to use are ones that are more traditional in their approach, i tried cinnamon and i personally found it nice to use, it pleasing to look at and its more closer to a traditional desktop with a task bar and such. my personalv favorite thought is mate, its very pleasing to me and has very extensive customizability without having to rice, but i don't really do that as i find it pleasing as it. when i first installing it, it has this stuff with workspaces like gnome, but it actually lets you customize the panel to where you can make it act like a traditional task bar, essentially you can customize how you manage windows and such, which atleast in my experience most environments don't seem to let you
images dont work btwfor the sake of my argument in terms on window management, this is how gnome does it
