It's a good point. What are these people thinking? What do they expect is going to happen?
Twenty years ago, I would've given you the advice to go into animation because you can still pursue a form of art while still maintaining a level of stability, but seeing as the industry has since imploded within the last several years.
Nowadays you should instead go into filmmaking. Genndy Tartakovsky did it before anybody else did, and it paid off, even if it was a one-hit wonder.
