Saint Symeon the Brother of God
Today, we commemorate the Holy Apostle and Hieromartyr Saint Symeon, the Brother of God and Bishop of Jerusalem.

St Symeon is said to have been the son of Cleopas, otherwise called Alphaeus, who was also the father of St James the Lesser, St Jude the Apostle, and Joses. Cleopas, according to tradition, was St Joseph the Betrothed’s brother; thus St Symeon was the nephew of St Joseph the Betrothed and a cousin of the Savior.

However, since Aramaic has no term for “cousin” distinct from “brother”, Symeon, whose diminutive is Simon, and his brothers are sometimes identified with the “brothers of the Lord”, who are mentioned in passing in the Gospels (Matthew 13:55, Mark 6:3). The Apolytikion of St Symeon refers to him simply as a “kinsman” of Christ.

Tradition holds that the family of St Symeon was from Nazareth. He was a witness to the miracles of Jesus Christ, and came to believe in him. After the Apostle James, the first bishop of Jerusalem, was killed in 63 AD, the Christians elected the Apostle Symeon to take his place.

In 66 AD began the First Jewish Revolt against the Romans in Judea. The Christians of Jerusalem were warned by God of the city’s destruction, and so led by their bishop St Symeon, they fled beyond the Jordan to the city of Pella (today in Jordan). After Jerusalem was siezed and burned in 70 AD, the Christians returned and settled among its ruins, and the Church flourished there for a short time.

The Emperors Vespasian and Domitian ordered that all descendants of King David be put to death. Symeon escaped Vespasian, but Domitian found out he was a cousin of the Lord, so he made him drink poison from scorpions, snakes and other poisonous reptiles. But Symeon remained unharmed.

When the Emperor Trajan (98-117) renewed that decree, it was reported to the governor Atticus that Symeon was of the lineage of King David, and had confessed the Christian Faith. The pagans seized St Symeon, who was at that time already over 100 years of age, and after prolonged tortures, they crucified him in the year 107.
