A prominent New Zealand activist who has been outspoken against Israel’s war in Gaza has had his property targeted by vandals in an overnight attack.
John Minto posted on social media on Wednesday morning, saying he woke up to find two Palestinian flags had been torn down, while “Nazi Scum” had been spray painted on the footpath outside his Christchurch address.
Minto also said that a “Together for Te Tiriti” sign had been spray-painted over and a banner reading “Make poverty history” had been ripped off his fence.
Minto told Stuff the incident happened on Tuesday night and came just one day after a US flag was burned at a protest Minto was at in support of Venezuela.
He said he was not “particularly worried” by the attack, which he labelled “pathetic”.
“I'm not particularly worried or concerned by it. It's just people sounding off. I really think it's more pathetic than anything.
“I mean, these people, if they'd knocked on the door, come in for a cup of tea and to argue or whatever, that will be fine. But [ it’s] still a bit childish to do what they did,” he said.
Minto said, next time the perpetrator should do “something constructive” with their anger.
“Next time you knock on the door and come have a cup of tea. If, presumably, you've got some anger there, do something constructive with it and come and talk.”
Minto said he is not concerned about his safety and has not reported the incident to police.
He said the flags and signs will be back up later on Wednesday.
Minto, who has been an activist for over 50 years, has been a prominent figure in the pro-Palestine movement in recent years and is a member of the Palestine Solidarity Network Aotearoa.
In May 2025, a police watchdog ruled the use of pepper spray on Minto at a protest in 2024 was unjustified, and his subsequent arrest was unlawful.
Minto, 70, was among four people charged with obstructing and resisting police after the Palestine Solidarity Network Aotearoa protest turned ugly in Lyttelton on Waitangi Day.
At the time, Minto told Stuff he was not harming anybody during the protest.
He said he was livestreaming the demonstration from the side of the road and alleged a police officer shoved him violently.
Incapacitated, Minto spent the next 30 minutes recovering before attempting to film from the footpath again. He alleged four officers “grabbed him”, told him he was under arrest and “violently dragged” him to a police car.
The charges against Minto were later dropped.
