/prothro/ - Proto-Anthro General

What is proto-anthro?

Proto-anthro is a broad term invented by me that describes the “furry fandom” before it was known as such.

Proto-anthro as an era ended after the attacks on the World Trade Center in September 11th, 2001.

Proto-anthro can be dated all the way back to the dawn of storytelling, an ancient example are Aesop’s Fables, which the most popular being The Fox and the Grapes.

This thread is meant for posting proto-anthros, proto-anthro is a very loose term, but it basically means absolutely *any* anthropomorphic animal caricature made before 9/11.

The usage of the term "furry" to describe a "fandom" has been main-stay since late 80s if I'm not mistaken. So would you not draw a line there rather than late 2001? To add, the term you're probably looking for is "funny animals" as that is what was typically used to describe the content pre-fandom.

I wasn't mistaken at all, don't know why I added that. There was an observable uptick in attendees to the LA branch of the Cartoon/Fantasy Organization in the early 1980s who were there for the talking animal anime (Sherlock Hound and Simba the White Lion mainly) more so than the other imported and in-house subbed anime.

Later in 1985 at an LA Sci-Fi convention, the C/FO members into anthropomorphic content held a room party for everyone to get together and sperg out about them, most notably the founder of C/FO Mark Merlino. All of this THEN finally culminating in the same convention the following year, where (I think?) after a friend of Merlino used the term "furry party" to describe last years event, he decided to adopt it onto the flyers. Picrel was from the following 1987 event.

Following this the other founder of these parties and Merlino went on to create Confurence. Then came the underground comic crowd who took note and attended all this and thus we got a shit heap of underground magazines, comics, USENET groups and such on and so forth. Steve Gallaci who was writing Albedo during the late/early 80s who already had a small crowd of Sci/Fi fans who followed him around ended up mashing together with the broader "furry" crowd, which led to the newsgroup "alt.fan.albedo" largely being abandoned for "alt.fan.furry" and himself getting more attention from the then small albeit growing fandom. Side-note but there was also a "fur" hierarchy on USENET at some point and enough BBS groups to note, but it's been a hot minute since I've looked into those aspects so I wont try to describe them.

Anyway, as a child, I loved that one Robinhood movie from Disney, the Narnia movies, and the fables of La Fontaine, although in the last one, the animals are anthropomorphic only in the sense that they speak (also counts for a few characters in Narnia too).

Does this count ?

Edit : Ah I guess Beorn from the LOTR world also counts as that (if were-bears count as that, but that would count all were-stuff as proto-furries, i.e. vampires, werewolves and such)
