I still have JewTube recommendations enabled on my TV and it keeps spewing out "Bad Apple" Touhou shit for whatever reason. Rather annoying.

My relationship with that whole series is... mixed, to say the least. Well, I'll cut the crap and admit that I am incapable of really understanding it. It is not something that can be easily organized and divided into distinct classes, there are no statistics associated with it. Not that I'm the type to be capable of parsing that stuff either, but my point is that I feel much more comfortable dealing with objects than characters. Pieces of machinery are easier for me to name than stupid oriental cartoon women.

It's not an uncommon sight to see a fan of Touhou that has never touched an actual piece of media related to it (as in, a game). Frankly I don't blame them. They're stupid for pretending that they like the series for what it is (beyond the "eye candy") rather than Discord fumo memes and dumb videos. That's what makes me so uniquely angry about it - very few people seem to like it beyond the surface level stuff, and those that do are nearly always insufferable anyway. What's also been getting under my skin is the subtle, yet noxious feelings of elitism it specifically seems to scream at me. I can't really blame them for that since, as I've said, most of the heckin' "fans" are "posers" (is that the right word? I'll take a gamble) but it's in the same realm of people who brag about Arch Linux on their T61 or some shit. I'm talking in circles though.

I think that's only because it's been around the longest, since the late 90s or so. To be fair I never really tried to delve into it all that much; the community's "elitism", somewhat disorganized nature of the media itself, and then of course the cultural barriers kinda scared me off. I will admit though that Touhou is somewhat unique in the grand pool of real womanslop (unlike OneShot & FPE) because some of the original works created from it have been rather impressive, at least to me.

What confuses my dummy brain is that Touhou is also very different in how it's... err, presented, I guess? It's not a monolith like FPE's single source video, the fandom has actually done a solid job of integrating their own material with the "canon" stuff.

It's certainly cemented itself in Internet culture far beyond the scope of anything made in the past 5-10 years though. Maybe even more. There's nothing else like it, I'll say that.
