To explain on why I believe this would be a good addition, by removing the little preview beside each board on the front-page showing the most recent postings in the respective threads, I believe it would promote users to actually click into the sub-forums they want to post in. The causation of this would be a greatly promoted incentive for broader discussion to be held in each of the boards, allowing less active threads to be seen by the average poster, rather than as it is now where all discussion typically gets filtered into the most recently posted-in thread. This may also improve user-retention greatly amongst newer users, who mightn't have found interest in the limited selection of active promoted threads prior.
If anything, the class for this element "node-extra" should be hidden for a period of a day in the default theme, just for the sake of seeing how users adapt to this temporary change. If I'm wrong, I'm wrong, but I really do think this'll promote nothing but good in user discussion and bring it closer to those found in imageboards and older forums, where threads that only few truly find interesting will be allowed flourish. Unlike now where similar threads are buried instantly in favor of more popular broad threads. To add to this too, by letting these niche threads flourish, the users most often found in them will be retained to the site increasing overall PPH/PPD.
