how did they end up there
At least here in Brazil, the government in the 20th century encouraged mass migration from European countries to make the population whiter, thing is, they also welcomed japs, specially refugees from World War II cause they also thought it was better than brownoids and would improve the racial composition of the country.

South America does have a sizeable legacy Japanese migrant population
Some countries do. Mostly Peru and Brazil but it's more noticeable in Peru.

Sometime during the 19th century, Japanese farmers were completely and utterly poor to the point where they could make about three times more by moving to Peru and working large cash crop plantations than they could in japan, so they went with the prospect of working a few years to come back home rich. Reality was different though because it turns out that the return trip was extremely expensive and way beyond what they could afford, so in the end a lot stayed. It's a similar story to why there are so many Italians in south america.

Honestly there's another side to it and that's that there people who just wanted to find an excise to run away from something, whatever it may be
