"Why do I have to live in such a wretched world?" I muttered rhetorically.
I slumped bonelessly on my couch (too hard, I didn't want it, but my wife demanded it), and surfed the internet. The floor was a mess with toys, laundry needed to be run, and dishes were piled around the sink. But I didn't have the energy to deal with any of them.
I had just come home from a 10 hour workday in the warehouse, filthy, muscles aching, only to have wife dump on me the job of putting our son to bed as soon as I walked in the door. She went right to bed then, and I knew better than to even suggest she help with the chores. I didn't need another screaming fight about how she feel like she does all the work in this family, and how dare I ask her to do more.
What work? I think. I work all day, and all night, and in the morning, I have to get my 3 year old son ready for school while she sleeps in until 10. I get an hour and a half to myself, and that only if I skip showering and do only the minimum number of chores.
As for her, when she isn't surfing social media, watching mindless sitcoms, and chatting on the phone with her lesbian friends, she's taking online classes to becoming a therapist. It might be nice to have more income coming in (nobody can survive these days on one income) but it also meant she spewed more and more leftist garbage every day, trying to convince me that I had metal issues and should take medication.
At least me current job let me exercise. When I worked as a history teacher for seven years in the public and private high schools, I was nearly as tired, and had no time to work out, so I was out of shape as well.
Why do I have to raise my son in this horrible world? I wondered again. I can already see the signs. My wife has stopped going to church, and told me she no longer believes homosexuality is a sin. I worry every day about what she is teaching my son while I'm away. I want him to have a stable, conservative upbringing like I had. I miss mature children's shows that stimulated the mind, and dressing up formally for church on Sundays. I look on the news and I see every kind of abomination from drugs to sexual deviancy becoming normal, and I long for the past.
The world's been going wrong for decades, ever since World War 2. The 50s were wonderful, but the rot was already present, it just needed to to fester. World War 1 started the decline, but it could have been arrested. Conservatism was still sreal womang, until we allied with the communists in World War 2, and decided everything the radical right believed in war wrong.
"It's all the fault of democracy." I decided. "In a totalitarian state, like nazi germany, people could be protected from dangerous ideas like communism. Freedom just gives people more chances to make mistakes.
If only he could have set things right. . .
Then, everything went black.
Perhaps somebody was listening right at that moment

I opened my eyes and sat up. Where am I? I thought. In bed, but how did I get here. Wasn't I on the couch?
I looked around, my head spinning. This wasn't my room. This wasn't my bed. It was a large, relatively Spartan room, looking like some old fashioned European hotel, like the kind I saw when I studied abroad in college. A grand portrait of Otto von Bismarck hung on the wall.
Windows were letting in the early light of dawn. I got up and looked out. The square below was crowded with men in brown shirts and swastika armbands, who pointed excitedly as I looked out.
I looked at the woman laying in the bed, just stirring, her dark hair spilling around the pillow. That's not my wife. My stunned mind thought.
No, my mind seized on something. That's. . . Eva
Eva Braun. My mistress
Like a floodgate had been opened, 45 years worth of memories flowed into my mind. I knew who I was not
I was Santa Claus.
I was fuhrer of Germany.
And this was 1934.
With an effort, I asserted myself. NO! Those are not my memories! I held on to who I was. Slowly, the tide receded, the memories became just background information.
I knew everything Claus knew, but my mind was still my own.
I stared down at my lap as my hands shook.
Good God. I thought. What's happened? What will I do now?
