New Zealand is heading toward a blisteringly hot weekend, with parts of the country set to bake under temperatures pushing into the mid-30s — but first, the weather has a few mood swings to get through.
The east of the North Island is shaping up as the hottest spot. Napier is forecast to climb to 32C on Friday, 33C on Saturday and a sweltering 35C on Sunday. Nearby Hastings looks even hotter, with 33C on Friday, 35C on Saturday and a searing 36C on Sunday.
The heat won’t be confined to the north. Timaru is forecast to reach 32C on Sunday, while Blenheim is set for 33C on Friday, easing slightly to 31C on Saturday and 30C on Sunday. Christchurch will also feel the warmth, topping out at around 29C on both Friday and Saturday, while Hamilton is expected to reach about 27C.
Before the heat really cranks up, today’s forecast offers a mixed bag.
Hotspots are firmly in the north and east, with Northland, Auckland, Coromandel, Bay of Plenty, Taupō, Gisborne and Hawke’s Bay enjoying mainly fine conditions.
However, isolated showers are expected to develop this afternoon and evening, some of them heavy and potentially thundery, with hail also possible. Areas east of Rotorua could see sudden, soaking downpours.
Across Waikato to Taranaki, including Taumarunui and Taihape, it’s generally fine, though inland areas may see the odd isolated shower later in the day — classic “looks settled until it isn’t” summer weather.
Further south, from Whanganui to Wellington, and across Wairarapa, Marlborough and Nelson, expect morning and evening cloud, with otherwise fine conditions in between.
The West Coast, from Buller to Westland, remains more unsettled, with partly cloudy skies, showers in South Westland, and isolated showers developing elsewhere, particularly about the ranges.
Canterbury is mostly in the clear, though some areas will wake to low cloud this morning, with a few isolated showers possible later in the afternoon and evening.
Otago and Southland are most likely to hear the rumble of thunder, with scattered showers developing this afternoon and evening — some heavy, possibly thundery, and with hail.
In Fiordland, rain — possibly heavy — is expected to ease to showers this evening, while the Chatham Islands can expect partly cloudy skies.
Bottom line: today’s weather may keep you guessing, but the message heading into the weekend is clear — the heat is coming, and it’s going to be intense.
