In Ireland "smarties" are a brand of coated chocolate balls. Basically a poor mans M&Ms.

Here, they're basically sugar tablets like sweetarts or whatever. When I was in middle school, there was this big thing where kids would crush them in the wrapper and "smoke" them (huffing sugar dust)

I really like those sorts of candies. I'm not a sweet connoisseur, but when I do have candy, I usually prefer those chalky, minty hard candies and or gelatine.
