Gnome sucks for customization, either xfce, kde, or a wm of your choice.

XFCE, LXDE, Cinnamon, Openbox and LXQT are the only stable and fast options on display. I can personally vouch for XFCE.

Don't install GNOME as a whole, it's a disgusting mess. Install gnome-shell and gnome-terminal individually.

I'm a big fan of the older T4xx series and some of the old workstation ones but they're useless for any serious work nowadays unless you're willing to fork over $200 (where I live anyway) for upgrades

It cost about the same money for a fully specced out T430 while consuming much less power and taking up less space. Less port selections (+ no compatibility with older docks) sure but I think it was worth it. Better performance too. Powerbridge is also a genuinely useful feature, I have a 48Wh external battery on mine.

$50 for a 14 year laptop here in Eastern Evropa. 2 years ago I bought a t470s for uhh $190? Or something? Not fair. I know it's worse in the 3rd world but the prices here are stupid too.

absolute trvke, I see listings for older models like T5/410 (1st gen Core I) for absurd prices like 200-300 USD even when they're in horrendous conditions simply because of the fact that they're considered retro due to their age, despite having no sort of "retro" appeal, unlike an older model like the T60/61. Brown people have no concept of natural depreciation nor the actual value/appeal of older products.
