The "nuclear family" discourse is mostly used to counter homosexuals. As for what you said, it's true, for most of history, humans also relied on tribe and their extended family for a support net. But as modern society shifted more more into alienating people away from their community, thus the importance of nuclear family nowadays. Before, a child who grew up without a father could rely on a grandpa, uncle, etc. for a paternal figure. Now, that is harder as those tend to be more distant, hence why single mother household are factories for emotionally stunted children.
